Greetings. In this category, with links also to TEACHERS/TEACHING & PERSONALHISTORY you will find acknowledgements and references to men and women of all walks of life that I will acknowledge and who have acknowledged me. In some cases the stories will continue in the 2 additional categories indicated above. All 3 categories, along with the BIO  considered together, will reveal the personal and situational experiences that have shaped not only my musical life, but all aspects of my life: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.  I begin this section with a shout out to Steve Vai. rP

Steve is included in both the Kudos Outbound & Kudos Inbound sections and for a very good reason. For more about our history: please see the continuing story in the Personal History section. But for the moment, in order to inaugurate this category, I acknowledge the honorable Mr. Vai first, as without his continuing friendship and advocacy there would not be a website! So many thanks to Steve. For the album notes of the recently mastered (by Vai) CD ‘Vortex’, there is mention of the first three tracks on the album as being dedicated to him as they were originally part of an EP program entitled ‘3,4,Vai!’.
 
Our friendship though goes considerably beyond his advocacy of my music. Steve is not only a worldwide consummate guitarist, but he is a globally known philanthropist. Of all the conversations that have taken place via: emails, telephone, in person, that I have shared with Steve over the past 12 years, 90% of the content of those exchanges have been about life stories, spirituality, and positive thinking. About 10% about music (unless he had specific questions during the mastering stage of the 4 albums he has done for me; or about the creation of this website for LWH: Light Without Heat).
 
Therefore, front and center, I acknowledge this great man, for being such a naturally upbeat figure in my life, and I am sure in the lives of many people. Thank you Vaistro!

I first met Paul when he was playing with the quartet called Three of Worlds. 
However I had been aware of his playing as part of the Paul Wintor concert and 
as co-founder of the group Oregon. While attending a ‘musician’s party’ 
at his home in Bolinas, various ensembles were constantly configuring 
& performing in the downstairs living room. After listening for several hours 
from the overlooking balcony, I went downstairs and played a half hour solo set.
 
When I returned to the upstairs balcony afterwards, Paul graciously approached me
& complimented me on my solo work, and the extent of what I had captured & 
expressed both harmonically (through my FingerStyle technique in Dadgad) 
as well as my solo slide work. Considering he was the co-founder of the group
Oregon along with guitarist Ralph Towner, I was moved .

at his invitation. He had a spent a year

at his home on Mulholland Dr. In L.A.
We worked on Lay Lady Lay and another 
2 tunes  for about 2-3 hours. He was pleased.

Kudos for Chris Chitouras goes both ways as we have spent hours recording and improvising in both Mill Valley, CA
& Medford, MA (in the greater Boston area). He has not only been an advocate for my 
music but I also acknowledge him as an accomplished musician, composer,
& producer who is substantially Influenced by the genres of: rock, jazz, pop, and fusion.
 
Additionally he has worked with a number of great African musicians for the past 12-15 years (especially from Mali)
including: Babatunde Olatunji & the Drums of Passion, Salif Kieta, Toumani Diabate, Habib Koite, Zani Diabate, 
Oumou Sangare, Djelimade Tournkara,  as well as band members w/Ali Farke Toure & Sunny Ade.
He has performed at the New Orleans Jazz Fest and headlined concerts with Bonnie Raitt & Jackson Brown,
Joan Baez, and Loggins & Messina, Aierto, Miles Davis, & Weather Report.

Ella is not only one of the several hundred guitarists 
& singer-songwriters that I have enjoyed teaching since
1987, but she is a multi-faceted karma yogin that is an accomplished
designer, chef, and musician.
 
Below’s vignette of bassist Kai Eckhardt took place
 at her home where she hosted nearly 100 musicians
in which she cooked for 2 days prior to the event. 
No one went hungry. Towards the end of the evening she got up 
to the mic and wailed. .

Kai is a world class bassist that I met in Fairfax, CA 
when he was part of an ensemble called: 
Three of Worlds, which included Paul McCandless (Oregon)
& Kit Walker (Windham Hill). Kai’s acknowledgments were 
both verbal and via spontaneous action. 
 
At a beautiful ‘musicians party’ hosted 
by Ella Zarum (See above) and Kit Walker 
(See Teachers/Teaching) there was a small P.A. setup 
in the living room utilized by a constant rotation
of musicians for approximately 30 minute sets 
for roughly 8-10 hours. 
 
At around 7 pm when most of the guests had eaten and were lounging in the 
living room I took the chair, plugged in my acoustic-electric guitar
& began a solo half hour set. During that time Kai  Eckhardt stood up, 
took his bass out of his case, plugged in & began improvising with me 
for the last 12 minuets of my set. It was an honor. 
 
Later when the party thinned out he expressed his sincere
appreciation for my solo guitar work, especially for one of 
the original pieces: Gondar Gardens which appears on the Monsoon Season CD.

HOWARD C. HOWARD:
MORRO BAY, CA
 
Howard is my older brother by a couple of years. He has consistently been a strong influence in my life. We both were gymnasts, and we started playing music at the ages of 11 and 13 respectively. I played the guitar, Howard played Bluegrass banjo, and we had our first band called the Smoggy Mountain Boys (mentioned in the Bio). Howard was an award winning banjo player on several occasions at the original Topanga Canyon Banjo and Fiddle Contests, and as the Smoggy Mountain Boys we played many a hootenanny night at a variety of clubs in Los Angeles at the time, including: The Troubadour, Ice House, LedBetter’s, The Golden Bear, and others. 
 
Later in our 20’s we had a 5 piece rock-fusion ensemble named The Voonderband. Howard had been playing guitar during the years he was focusing on Bluegrass banjo, and made the transition solely to the electric guitar for this ensemble. We co-wrote many of the pieces of the band. He played lead guitar, I played rhythm and slide guitar, and we had keyboards, bass, and drums. We played on a lot of stages in Los Angeles. The music was melodic and yet very complex at times. Howard also sang lead vocals, and was a co-leader of the band.
 
He has been a ‘go to’ brother for over 5 decades. Not just as a musician, but in a spiritual capacity as well, especially during the almost 40 year marriage to my late sister-in-law: Dee Zenith. Dee died way too young, and I consider her a mentor as well, especially spiritually. She also worked with me at the Troubadour. More about her follows. Today Howard is an accomplished poet. His written word is as sophisticated as his guitar playing during the Voonderband years (which was a cross between John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana). During his Bluegrass years he also spent time in Nashville and played in a number of ensembles, including bass with legends Vern and Ray.

DEE ZENITH

Dee and my brother Howard met and instantly fell in love with each other when Howard was 19 and Dee was 24. Dee had been a nurse for many years already, and ultimately became a Charge Nurse at 4-South (ICU) at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, CA (which has since become something else). Dee was a remarkable woman, truly a special family member and mentor for me. In her later years (before she contracted a rare hidden melanoma) I would call her around midnight (while she was on duty & filling scripts and doing paper work) and she would ask me about my day, and was always interested in my life, and extremely positive and encouraging. Howard introduced us almost immediately upon meeting her, so I knew here for almost 40 years as well (since the age of 17).
 
Dee was a very talented photographer too. She shot a lot of portraits, erotic models, and music events. At her memorial service which was very well attended (including 2 doctors which is a rare site at the memorial service for a nurse) there was a large display of her photographic work. Some of her work included shots of the Voonderband in action, including an airborne pic of me with my stratocaster pointing up at 12 o’clock, on stage at Santa Monica College. 
 
Dee was a truly selfless person. And I will always consider her to be a major influence on my life. Just before she passed, I was asked to be with her for about 4 hours while my brother went to have some medical procedures done. This was from about 6 am to around 10 am on a weekday morning. At that point, due to the advancement of the cancer, she was downstairs in the living room, with an I.V., and weighed about 85 pounds. She could not eat, and basically moistened her lips with a popsicle or some flavored ice. However when she heard that I was going to come and sit with her for a few hours, she insisted that I bring a lunch if I wanted too, and I did. I think it was a turkey meatloaf sandwich from Whole Foods, and some side dish. And even though she could not eat, she asked me to come and sit next to her while I had a few bites so that she could enjoy the aroma of the sandwich.
 
I did not know that morning that she only had about 36 hours left. When I departed, I gave her a big kiss, and said I would see her soon. This of course never happened, as she passed within a day and half. While at the house that morning, she directed me to a few places in the living room where she had placed a few gifts (treasures) for me, which I still have today. They’re talismans of sort. The little gifts included a lovely piece of jade, a bone ring with a beaded necklace, a small buddha on a red string, and a sweet little Chinese box for my guitar picks.
 
Dee represented a truly divine woman and teacher for me, and though less than 10 years my senior, I always felt like she was  an ageless spiritual being. I miss her very much,

BACK STORY: 
From 1962 until 1970 I lovingly devoted myself to gymnastics, specifically the pommel horse, also called the sidehorse. I started in junior high school at the age of 12, around the same time that I began the study of guitar. I went on to be a Los Angeles city champion on the event in 1969, unofficially that is, as I disqualified my self from individual competition by falling off the ‘horse’ in preliminaries, therefore earning a low score. However it turned out that our high school (University High in WLA) was to compete that year against Monroe High from the San Fernando Valley as the top 2 teams in Los Angeles. Therefore, on the night of the All-City competition finals which took place at Cal State Northridge, I was able to compete as a team member, regardless of my individual standing. Btw, up until the time that I had taken the fall, I had consistently won competitions, even though I was always nervous. Nervous yet confident, as I spent roughly 25-30 hours/week training: 5 days and 2 additional nights at the high school, and Saturdays and Sundays with Olympic champions at UCLA.
 
On the night of the All-City competition (and I attribute this to having a deep sense of relaxation due to the fact that I was ‘not’ competing as an individual, just as a team member), I performed the best routine I had ever done up until that time. Imagine a young 17 year old guy, 6`2″ tall, 137 lb. (no kidding, my nickname from teammates was ‘ the stick’ and sometimes ‘needle-neck’!), with perfect form and flawless execution. Because of the earlier fall one week before, I played it safe and designed a conservative routine that though lacking somewhat in difficulty (which potentially allows competitors to earn higher scores, the maximum being 10.0, which is a rarity btw), allowed me to fully focus on the swing, flow, form, and dismount height. My score that evening was 9.1, which was significantly higher than anyone else competing on the horse. The adjective bitchin’ comes to mind! 
 
Besides being elated by the feel of the performance, the yogic experience which was for me always foremost, and is my approach to music as well, I was pleasantly rewarded by interviews with several college coaches that night after the conclusion of the competition, offering full scholarships. This included coaches from UCLA, UC Berkeley, Brigham Young, University of Nevada, and University of Washington. I accepted the invitation to be a Husky, and departed for Seattle in the Fall of 1969. Later I attended Cal (UC Berkeley) under the guidance of Hal Frey, same coach to Dan Millman (Olympic Champion & author of ‘Way of the Peaceful Warrior’).
 
Till this day, I attribute my success at having a spiritual experience, (and therefore an experience of the process of mastery), to the all-embracing love and support of my coach Duane La Rue. I am not the only one btw who has acknowledged this man, and especially to him personally for many years to follow, which I have done regularly since 1969. The last time though that we spoke in 2009, he had suffered a fall from his roof, and lost much of his memory, specifically with regards to the early years. I called him at home, and he was quite surprised that someone from 40 years earlier would still be moved by my experience. I without hesitation I expressed that the power of love is not bound or limited by time, and that his love lived within me and I would always pass it forward as best I could. He was my first mentor in education and influenced my work ethic not only as a competitive gymnast, but in life in general.

COACH DUANE LARUE (Newspaper Bio)
 
Longtime Uni High teacher, coach and legend Duane LaRue passed away on May 8, 2017, at age 81. Born in Los Angeles in 1935, he graduated from Washington High School and went to Pepperdine College — as it was known then — on a football scholarship. He came to Uni for the 1962-63 school year as a physical education teacher and the co-coach for football and coach for gymnastics.
 
He had a long and successful career at Uni, which included making the gymnastics program one of the best in the City, winning the 1970 All-City team championship. He continued at Uni for 32 academic years and finally retired as Physical Education department chairman and Athletic Director at the close of the 1993-94 academic year. During his early years of teaching he was also a part-time scout for the Los Angeles Rams.
 
LaRue was a popular figure on campus despite an outwardly gruff demeanor. He demanded effort and excellence at all levels and from everyone he worked with, but with a sense of humor — if you weren’t too scared to let it come out over time — that endeared him to many. 
 
In 1987, he was presented with an Apple Award for teaching excellence by Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley

ADRIAN SIEGLER 

SEATTLE, WA
During the 1960s and 1970s, Professor Frederick Adrian Siegler became a popular but contentious figure on campus for his unorthodox pedagogy, and his colleague Professor Michael Lerner garnered attention for his involvement in anti-war protests with the Seattle Liberation Front. Siegler was a big influence and during the 2 years that I knew him he experienced a radical change in consciousness, which included meditation, fasting, becoming a fruitarian, and ultimately showing up on campus with his goats (that he would bring with him from his modest home on the Olympic Peninsula). While his goats grazed, he sat full lotus on his desktop in front of a class of nearly 100 students, and meditated while students asked him questions. Often he would burst out laughing, and the entire class would follow. Needless to say, the class grading system was pass/fail, and everyone passed. At this point in his life he was truly a yogi, must have weighed around 100 pounds ± but was radiant. His hair was also uncommonly long compared to the other professors. Adrian was tenured, and received his degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago.
 
However, when I first met Siegler years earlier, he had not yet gone through this transition. He heard me playing one day in one of the back stairwells at the University (where I would often go to play because of the beautiful acoustics), and he invited me to sit in with a trio that he had which included himself on flute, his wife Dorothy on dumbek, and a senior student named Marvin on cello. Marvin btw had shared with me a story how when growing up in Seattle, his family’s gardener was a man named James Hendrix. James became a good and trusted friend of the family, and would often talk about his guitar-playing son: Jimi! I always got a kick out of that.
 
I joined the trio, making it a quartet, and we improvised 2-3 days/week in the teacher’s lounge on the 3rd floor of the Philosophy building on campus. Big bay windows overlooking the quad revealed a beautiful array of cherry trees, which blossomed profusely in the Spring. The quartet would play for several hours each time. Siegler indicated it as a Philosophy of Religion class for me, and of course I passed.
 
Adrian became a true friend and teacher (way beyond philosophy), and I remember him fondly to this day for the respect he showed me, and the acknowledgement even then of my contributions of my acoustic guitar work to the quartet. Years later I had heard that he had passed. Rumors had it that he had frozen to death, meditating, in one of the out-buildings on the peninsula. He was beloved by many.

ROBERT MARCHESE

PITTSBURGH, PA
Robert was the manager of Los Angeles’ premier nightclub: Doug Weston’s Troubadour. He also was a janitor there! He had a bit of an acerbic wit, but to me he was always kind and very acknowledging. He supported my music, but I knew him more as a fellow employee at the Troubadour in the early 1970’s. I was 21 + at the time, and well may have been the fastest bartender that the club ever had. Because of my speed and precision (and the fact that I was always extremely tidy), he nick named me Rick Benny (short for Benzedrine) though I never took it. I hardly even drank. 
 
The Troubadour at this time was the busiest club in the West Hollywood/Hollywood area. Everyone came through this venue to play, from: Mike Davis to Elton John. Robert would often stop by the end of the front bar, just next to the entrance to the seated area, and order a cognac. Of course within seconds there was one placed in front of him on a cocktail napkin with a clean ashtray and he would  give a ’shout out’ Rick Benny! My man. Sitting at the bar on a regular basis was Tom Waits and Chuck E. Weiss (Chuck E’s in Love by Rickie Lee Jones). Below is a picture of Marchese sitting in Tom’s Cadillac in front of the club.
 
Bob always showed me respect, and though I have not seen him in decades, I still consider him to be dear friend. Not only was he the GM of the club, but he also chose to carry a few janitorial shifts as well. In earlier years, he produced a Grammy award winning album of Richard Prior at the Troubadour, and worked with Hendrix in the studio. He had some cool stories about Hendrix when he recorded. He said that when Hendrix sang, so as not to see or be seen, he would baffle himself in behind screens. 
 
Another thing that had earned Bob’s respect, besides being such a fast bartender, constantly keeping the bar clean, and pouring precise amounts of alcohol to satisfied patrons 4-5 deep at the bar (usually waiting to get into the next show, or just having come out of the previous show) was that I was 100% honest. I did not skim tips. There were many that did. As a matter of fact I first started bartending in the kitchen, serving up drinks to the waitstaff that served patrons seated in the house. The front bartender at the time was stealing, got fired, and I replaced him. Bob would stand for a few minutes drinking his cognac, or talking with Waits, then salute me, and disappear into the club to check in with the doormen.

JOHN BIZZARO:
BOULDER, CO
John’s Restaurant Today (New Owners)

When I returned to the U.S. after 1 year of teaching in London I settled in Boulder,CO. (See notes for the Track’ Goodbye Magritte’ on the Discography page for the CD: ’Sweet and Sour City’ which gives an introduction to my years in Boulder. After securing an efficient single apartment near downtown I heard about a great chef named John Bizzarro who had a restaurant with his wife Nancy. He trained with ‘old school’ chefs specializing in Continental cuisine during his years in Miami: the Laudisio family.
 
John had a 4o seat restaurant that was a small converted craftsman style house) and was rated the best restaurant in the Denver area even though Boulder is quite some distance away. Just to be able to get into the kitchen I took on a job for dishwashing (which I loved) with the strategy of segueing into prepping and cooking in the kitchen. I already had extensive training at San Francisco Zen Centers kitchen at Green Gulch Farm in Mill Valley, CA. At the time the head priest of the kitchen (called the Tenzo) was Dan Welch, a marvelous chef in his own right. And his wife Deborah Madison ( a James Beard award winning vegetarian chef) was the Ino (the priest in charge of the zendo or meditation hall).
 
Since I had been in the restaurant business for as long as I had been playing the guitar, joining John’s kitchen was a natural step. I moved from washing dishes to prepping the cook’s line within about 6 weeks. Prepping the line in a French restaurant was as fascinating as it was detailed. And working with the Bizzarros was a rewarding experience. John also studied Zen (he had a Korean zen master), was an artist, father, award winning chef, and extremely grounded. He also was a big fan of my music. 
 
While working in the restaurant 35 hours/week: I was also working on the guitar 35 + hours/week and preparing for the album that would later solidify my connection to David Stewart (Eurythmics) and also Tom Petty. John was not only a great teacher for me as regards Continental cooking; but also spiritually as well. And though my time was equally divided between cooking and working on the guitar, I derived tremendous energy from both, and ultimately learned how to cook, and alsorecorded my first album: ‘Red Horizon’ which John often payed while we worked. I still remember him today and pay homage to him.
